Nigeria launches sovereign cloud strategy to keep national data on home soil
TL;DR
NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa is driving Nigeria's Sovereign Cloud Strategy, framing local data control as a matter of national security and economic self-determination, not just a technical upgrade.
NITDA has partnered with the International Data Centre Authority (IDCA) to launch the Nigeria Digital Triangle (NDT), a network of AI-enabled, hyperscale data centres designed to host sovereign cloud services locally, supported by the recent deployment of over 730 5G sites.
UniCloud Africa, led by CEO Dr. Krishnan Ranganath, has partnered with Open Access Data Centres (OADC) to deploy enterprise-grade sovereign cloud and GPU-as-a-Service infrastructure inside Nigeria, with local currency billing positioned as a direct answer to forex-driven cloud costs.
The government's National Cloud Policy aims to migrate a significant portion of federal public institutions to local cloud environments, while making clear that global hyperscalers remain welcome but must work with local partners and create value within Nigeria.
Intelligence
The immediate signal for Nigerian fintech founders, healthtech startups, and government contractors is that local cloud infrastructure is being built with them as the primary beneficiaries. Lower latency, local currency billing, and reduced egress fees could meaningfully cut operating costs within the next 12 to 24 months.
For Nigerian developers and cloud engineers, the build-out of the Digital Triangle and sovereign GPU infrastructure represents a near-term demand surge for local cloud skills that the market has not yet priced in.
Enterprises currently locked into dollar-denominated AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud contracts should begin evaluating migration feasibility now, as the National Cloud Policy signals that regulatory pressure to localize data for public sector work is likely to intensify.
