NCC launches three-year IPv6 transition plan as Nigeria's internet infrastructure hits its limits
TL;DR
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) inaugurated the Nigerian IPv6 Council on Thursday, bringing together government agencies, telecoms, and private companies to drive a national shift from the ageing IPv4 internet protocol to IPv6 over three years.
Nigeria's IPv6 adoption sits at just 5% — far behind India, Saudi Arabia, and Gabon, all above 40% — even as internet consumption hit 1.39 million terabytes in January 2026, a 38.4% year-on-year surge.
Nigeria's 5G rollout, expanding agent banking networks, and the explosion of connected mobile devices all depend on a scalable internet addressing system — and IPv4 is already exhausted globally, meaning new addresses simply aren't available. For Nigerian fintechs like Moniepoint, OPay, and PalmPay, whose agent networks rely on millions of low-cost connected devices, IPv6 is not an abstract infrastructure debate but a practical ceiling on growth. The dual-stack complexity and security blind spots flagged in the plan are also real concerns for Nigerian banks and telcos that often run lean IT teams
