Meta moves 7,000 staff into AI roles while cutting 8,000 jobs globally
TL;DR
Meta is reassigning roughly 7,000 employees into four new AI-focused divisions covering products, applications, and infrastructure, while simultaneously cutting around 8,000 jobs, about 10% of its global workforce of approximately 78,000.
The restructuring, reported by Bloomberg, was communicated internally by Meta's Head of Human Resources Janelle Gale, who said the changes would create a flatter organisation with smaller, more agile teams; affected employees were instructed to work remotely on Wednesday, May 20 as transition notices went out.
Meta's AI pivot follows years of heavy investment in its metaverse division, Reality Labs, which underdelivered commercially; the company now plans to spend between $115 billion and $135 billion on AI development in 2026 alone, including large-scale data centres and AI features across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
Intelligence
For tech professionals and developers, this restructuring is a clear signal that AI infrastructure and product skills, not general software engineering, are what global tech employers are now paying to retain and recruit.
Developers and engineers who want to remain competitive for remote roles at Meta or similar companies over the next 12 to 18 months should be actively building experience in AI application development, model integration, or data infrastructure rather than waiting for demand to arrive. For startups and founders building on Meta's platforms, particularly WhatsApp, which is central to commerce and communication, the aggressive AI investment in those products means new capabilities are coming that could reshape how businesses engage customers, likely within the next one to two years.
