Kenyan startup Fikra launches M-Pesa-compatible AI API priced for African developers
TL;DR
James Miano founded Fikra API earlier this year, an OpenAI-compatible AI inference API built specifically for African developers, with M-Pesa payments and flat-rate pricing of $1 per 2 million tokens.
Currently live in Kenya via Paystack (which supports M-Pesa and mobile money across sub-Saharan Africa), Fikra has onboarded its first 10 users and shipped two proprietary models, including Fikra Nano 1B with continent-wide scale as the stated goal.
Intelligence
Major AI API providers like OpenAI and Anthropic require a minimum $20 spend and a credit/debit card, both significant barriers in markets where most people transact via mobile money and $20 can represent a week's wages.
This is a direct response to a real infrastructure gap that Nairobi's developer community has quietly struggled with. M-Pesa dominates payments here, but none of the major global AI API providers support it, effectively locking out developers who lack international cards.
Fikra's flat-rate token pricing ($1 per 2M tokens, no input/output split) is also meaningfully simpler and cheaper than OpenAI's tiered model, which matters for bootstrapped founders burning through tokens during prototyping.
The bootstrapped, Kenya-first approach mirrors how Africa's Talking scaled its developer API business starting local, solving a friction point the global giants ignore, then expanding continent-wide.
