Flutterwave partners with blockchain firm Tempo to cut Africa's cross-border payment costs using stablecoins

TL;DR

Flutterwave, Africa's leading payments company, has partnered with Tempo, a Layer-1 blockchain network, to integrate stablecoin settlement rails into Flutterwave's Send App and Flutterwave for Business platforms.

Remittance fees to sub-Saharan Africa average about 7 percent according to the World Bank, above the global average of 6 percent and more than double the UN's 3 percent target, while multi-bank correspondent chains cause settlement delays spanning several business days.

Tempo's blockchain network will be added as an additional settlement layer within Flutterwave's existing multi-chain ecosystem, enabling wallet-to-wallet transactions using stablecoins USDC and USDT, with Tempo's infrastructure aligned to ISO 20022 global messaging standards for financial interoperability.

Intelligence

This partnership signals that Nigeria's largest fintech player is doubling down on stablecoin infrastructure as a serious operational tool, not a speculative bet. At a moment when naira volatility and FX access constraints make predictable, low-cost cross-border settlement a genuine competitive advantage for Nigerian businesses.

For SMEs and freelancers using Flutterwave for Business to receive international payments, faster settlement and more predictable fees could meaningfully improve working capital management, particularly across high-volume corridors to Europe and North America.

Within the next six to twelve months, the practical test will be whether the integration reaches full deployment and whether Nigerian users on the Send App experience measurable reductions in cost and settlement time compared to existing rails.

SEC Nigeria's evolving digital asset framework will also determine how freely stablecoin-based settlement can be marketed and scaled domestically — that regulatory signal is the key variable to watch.
