Nigerian troops seize over 400 Starlink devices allegedly used by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists

Troops of Sector 2, North East Operation Hadin Kai intercepted more than 400 Starlink satellite internet terminals allegedly used by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists to coordinate operations.

Devices were seized during intelligence-driven operations across Sambisa Forest, the Timbuktu Triangle, and other terrorist enclaves in Nigeria's North-east, with supply routes traced from Kano through Nguru and surrounding corridors.

The military says terrorists rely on civilian supply chains, including traders, transporters, and livestock markets, to move communication equipment, fuel, food, and drugs into remote hideouts, and over 400 logistics networks linked to insurgent resupply have been disrupted.

The seizure signals that commercially available satellite internet technology, including Starlink, has become a meaningful operational tool for non-state armed groups in the Lake Chad Basin, raising urgent questions for regulators and distributors about how these devices reach conflict zones.

For Starlink's operator and Nigerian regulators like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), this development will likely intensify pressure within the next 6 to 12 months to implement stricter end-user verification and resale controls on satellite terminal distribution across northern Nigeria.
